A critical component of environmental justice is the idea that all citizens have a right to a healthy environment, no matter what their ethnicity or socioeconomic status. In addition to air pollution and unhealthy ground water, the potential for accidents is ever present. When accidents happen or long-term health and environmental effects become apparent, who pays the price? Who is accountable? What can be done to prevent further damage to our health and the environment? This lecture addresses these questions and offers suggestions for creating a healthy environment that will be beneficial for all communities. Carmen Ramirez, attorney, serves on the Board of Governors of the State Bar of California and is an active community leader for environmental justice and sustainable development in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. Sponsored by the Center for Equality and Justice. This lecture will be held in the Roth Nelson room on campus. |
