He has published widely in these areas, including the 2011 book Punished: Policing the Lives of Black and Latino Boys. Based on three years of field research and in-depth interviews with young men in Oakland, Calif., Rios analyzed how juvenile crime policies and criminalization affect the everyday lives of urban youth. Rios’ numerous awards include the 2010 New Scholar Award From American Society of Criminology and the 2011 UCSB Harold J. Plous Award. Punished received the 2012 Best Book Award, Latino/a Sociology Section, presented by the American Sociological Association. Admission is free.
