Approximately one in every four adults in Ventura County struggles to read. The READ Literacy program helps Ventura County adults learn to read or to improve their reading. The READ program has been operated by the Ventura County Library for 28 years and is held at three library and two correctional facility locations across Ventura County. The READ program uses volunteers who work with each learner separately each week. By providing one-on-one coaching, adults learn to read better and understand more, which leads to better jobs and improved self-esteem. About 125 volunteers help 225 adults each year. All services are free. READ is holding presentations for those interested in learning more about the program as potential learners or volunteers. The next presentations are in Ventura on the third Tuesday of every month through November, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Santa Barbara Bank & Trust Community Room at 801 Victoria, room 200-B; and in Camarillo on October 18 from 7-8 p.m. at the Ventura County Star Community Room at 550 Camarillo Center Drive behind the outlet stores.
