5 O'Clock Somewhere
This year, be thankful for beer
By Chris O'Neal 11/27/2013
Gather ’round the Thanksgiving table now; it’s time to talk turkey. Strictly speaking, everyone and their grandmother whips out a bottle of wine for the dinner table; whether or not it works with the stuffing, sweet potatoes or pumpkin pie is beside the point. Why not challenge your relatives with something other than politics this year by broadening their horizons with a beer?
For a brew that’ll satiate you and taste great with both the stuffing and your turkey, try Saison Dupont from Brasserie Dupont. The saison style, originally from the countryside of Belgium and France, varies wildly from brewer to brewer, but Saison Dupont is considered a standard by which all others are judged.
Bright and floral with a bit of spice, this saison will accentuate the savory bird while mellowing the sweetness of your meemaw’s sweet potatoes with marshmallows. Check the aisle at Ojai Beverage Company or Whole Foods for 750-milliliter bottles for a classy way to serve up this treat.
Recently, while visiting the magnificent cheese counter at Ventura’s Paradise Pantry, I was introduced to Brasserie Dupont’s Bière de Beloeil. This full-bodied brew is a relic of craft beer before craft beer was known as craft beer.
With hints of apple and a big, bold finish of malty sweetness, the Bière de Beloeil (served from a 750-milliliter bottle) is as much Thanksgiving as is the crayon cornucopia your kid brought home from kindergarten. Pairs nicely with all manner of your savory items and is equally as good with chocolate.
There is, of course, room for wine as well. If you can get your hands on Force of Nature’s cabernet out of Paso Robles, serve it to the wine aficionados and watch as their respect for you intensifies. Check Camarillo’s Wine Closet for a bottle or two.
Enjoy Thanksgiving, whether with beer, wine or otherwise. After all, it’s the only holiday in which drinking and eating yourself into a food coma is considered the status quo.
Brasserie Dupont’s Saison Dupont can be found at Whole Foods, Oxnard, 650 Town Center Drive, Oxnard, or Ojai Beverage Company, 655 E. Ojai Ave., Ojai. Brasserie Dupont’s Bière de Beloeil can be found at Paradise Pantry, 222 E. Main St., Ventura. The Wine Closet is located at 2423 Ventura Blvd., Camarillo.
