Note Worthy

Christmas in the ’Nard, and the fading Buzz

By Michel Miller 12/20/2012

Touring and Recording

The most successful local band that no one in the 805’s heard of, Creature Feature just finished up a slew of U.S. dates that took it from Seattle to Massachusetts and everywhere in between for audiences who regard Halloween as a way of life. Perpetually on the road, New Liberty announced plans to take SXSW by storm again this year followed by a possible tour of Europe in the fall of 2013. The band just finished recording new material with Roger Camero (No Motiv). There are plans to release a new song online every month in 2013 with accompanying art work and outtakes from a documentary that Garrett Combs has been filming about the band. At the end of the year, a limited vinyl release with a 12-page booklet displaying all the art will be available. Catch New Liberty on New Year’s Eve at Good Bar’s masquerade party. Army of Freshmen announced that it will return to the UK in April to play the Hit the Deck Festival.

Winning

Congratulations to Zoey’s Ones to Watch Singer-Songwriter winner Seamus Turner. The young Newbury Park troubadour who is also a student at California State University, Chico, hopes to have an album recorded in the near future. “I am really grateful for what Polly [Hoganson] has done for promoting the local music scene in Ventura County,” he says. RAW Ventura County put a bow around its season of showcases at Bombay Bar by awarding a handful of artists an opportunity to compete for national recognition against RAW artists from other cities. Five bands made it to the finals for Ventura County; the winner was Cirque Noir. The Ventura County Music Awards website has finally been amended to reflect the correct date of the ceremonies, May 11, in conjunction with Ventura Music Week. What will actually become of the awards or Music Week still remains unclear as organizers VC Buzz (music awards) and Eric Wallner (Music Week) appear to be in a state of flux or, in Wallner’s case, to have moved on.

Reorganizing

Joel Perkins and Dalaney Thompson have left VC Buzz to form the DIY collective Mute on the Floor along with Kat Rodgers. MOTF has been putting together some impressive rock bills at various local venues and there are plans for a Web series on BlankTV, the first installment of which will feature an interview with T.S.O.L’s frontman and author Jack Grisham. If you’re sad about Bernadette’s on Main shutting down, you can have Bernadette make you a drink at Zoey’s on Thursday nights. The tiny pub’s weekly trivia night has also been moved to Zoey’s on Thursday nights.

Playin’ Santa

It’s beginning to sound a lot like Christmas in Ventura County. Alexandra and the Starlight Band, featuring Zachary James, released “Rock ’n’ Roll Christmas,” a  super-sparkly rockin’ holiday love song that is available at www.alexandraband.com. Tony Cortez (Ill Repute, The Loads), who says he’s a longtime fan of the A Very Special Christmas albums, put together a holiday compilation featuring local, mostly punk bands.  It began with a song he wrote for the Loads —“Although it isn’t really a Christmas song exactly, it’s about Christmas and says the word Christmas a lot,” he says.  He decided to ask around and see if anyone else wanted to do a compilation and the result is a 17-song collection of music for the most wonderful (dreaded) time of year. Participating bands include Punk Rawk Elvis, Ill Repute, Channel 3, Strand Quentin and Blastoid, among others. “Everyone on the album is friends of mine and people/bands I specifically wanted to be on it,” says Cortez. Though he had planned to have CDs made, time wouldn’t allow it, so Nardcore Holiday 2012 is available in its entirety as a free download by visiting www.nardcore805.com.

I could not be sicker of Zachary James. So jive; musically completely tepid and dull. Another pretend rocker who no doubt spends hours getting his look just right and gluing rhinestones on his guitar. Time would be much better spent practicing your scales.
