The restaurant offers authentic Korean food, including spicy squid stir fry, spicy chicken gui and bulgogi. … Aloha Steakhouse, located at 369 S. California St. in Ventura, is scheduled to open its new bar this month, built in the former art gallery space next door, and will offer a notable selection of wine. … Coastal Grill opened at the Embassy Suites Mandalay Beach Hotel and Resort at 2101 Mandalay Beach Road. The restaurant is replacing Capistrano’s, and offers a variety of American cuisine in a casual dining environment. Bamboo Creek Spa has opened at 1002 E. Ojai Ave. in Ojai. The spa offers reflexology massage, oriental body oil massage and hot stone therapy. … KINshoppe Salon and Day Spa has opened at 2171 E. Thompson Blvd. in Ventura. The salon has numerous stylists, two estheticians and a massage therapist and includes a shop for men, Manny and Burd, as well as a kids’ playroom. … Bark ’Em Pet Supplies is open at 379 Carmen Drive at the Carmen Plaza in Camarillo. The store offers training and grooming, organic pet food, boutique carriers and a variety of gear. … Conejo Connections Resource Center (CCRC) recently opened at 350 Hillcrest Drive at The Oaks Shopping Center in Thousand Oaks. CCRC offers Conejo Valley residents information about volunteer opportunities and community and social services. … The keys to the newly completed Channel Islands Boating Center were presented to California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI) president Richard Rush on April 3. The boating center will be operated by CSUCI and will provide educational and recreational opportunities to CSUCI students and Ventura County residents. … Ventura Rental Center recently opened at its new location at 320 W. Stanley Ave. in Ventura. It has a variety of great equipment, ranging from compressors to generators, small tools, trailers and much more.

Ventura Unified School District superintendent Dr. Trudy Tuttle Arriaga has been named recipient of the Marcus Foster Memorial Award for Administrator Excellence by the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) Board of Directors and Awards Committee. The award recognizes outstanding leadership and significant contributions to education by a school administrator. … Melanie Lindsey was selected as March’s Teacher of the Month by Ventura Commerce and Education. Lindsey has been teaching for 15 years and is currently teaching 12th grade AP psychology and AP English at Foothill Technology High School and runs community outreach and academic achievement programs. … Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Ventura County Board Member Sue Bauer received the 2012 William E. Hamm Outstanding Service Award. Bauer was honored for her numerous community contributions. … The Boys & Girls Club of Simi Valley recognized their donors and presented various Service Award Winners for continued support. Also, 13-year-old club member Samantha Garibay received the 2012 Youth of the Year award for her volunteering efforts. … Express Employment Professionals of Ventura County received awards at the 30th annual International Leadership Conference in Salt Lake City. The firm received the Innovation Award, Helping Hand Award and the Gold Circle of Excellence Award, which recognized it as a top-performing office. … Ventura Water and its collaborators Pasteurization Technology Group and Carollo Engineers received the Project of the Year Award during the 2013 WateReuse California Annual Conference. The award recognized Ventura’s use of innovative pasteurization to disinfect water.

Kristin Decas, Port Hueneme CEO and director, has been appointed for a two-year term to the Marine Transportation System National Advisory Council (MTSNAC). With MTSNAC, Decas will help make recommendations on the effective use and expansion of America’s Marine Highways, waterways and ports. … James Chavez is the new executive chef at Ventura’s Pierpont Inn. Capt. Dave Sasek of Naval Base Ventura County has been appointed as the new board liaison for the Economic Development Collaborative of Ventura County (EDC-VC). Sasek and his alternate, Cmdr. Scott Loeschke, are expected to facilitate communication between EDC-VC’s board and governmental defense agencies within the region. …

Davidson brings years of experience as a leader who is committed to the advancement of youth…Captain Burt Espe recently took command of Port Hueneme’s Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC), relieving current ommander Captain William DeBow, who is now deputy program manager for the Naval Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technology Division. … Matt Guthrie has joined the Ventura Chamber of Commerce (VCC) as the public policy and government/external affairs manager. Guthrie is the former principal assistant for former state Sen. Tony Strickland, R-Moorpark. He will assist VCC’s president and Board of Directors with business advocacy, development of public policy and membership recruitment. … Central Coast Alliance United for a Sustainable Economy (CAUSE) is merging with its sister organization People United for Economic Justice Building Leadership Through Organizing (PUEBLO), with offices now covering more than 100 miles of the Central Coast. The now larger regional organization will continue to invoke social, economic and environmental justice.

 

In the name of charity

Jim Price, owner of Oxnard’s DMI Ready Mix Concrete, has been promoting the Boys & Girls Club of Oxnard and Port Hueneme (BGCOP) by displaying the BGCOP on the company’s truck and has donated nearly $10,000 to BGCOP. … Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market has given $35,478 to 36 Ventura schools through its Shop for Schools fundraising program, which raised a total of more than $1.7 million statewide for more than 2,200 schools.

Environment

Ventura Water and its partners Patagonia and iThentic launched the 2013 Online Water Film Contest in recognition of World Water Day. The contest aims to increase water awareness through imagination, education and entertainment. Filmmaker submissions for recent short films (less than 5 minutes) that address the topic of water are being accepted at www.watertake1.com until Sept. 3.
