Ventura Hillsides Music Festival

Sept. 30, 1 p.m. Ventura Hillsides Conservancy presents the 2006 Ventura Hillsides Music Festival in Arroyo Verde Park. Featured performers include Michael McDonald, Jackson Browne with Fred Martin & the Levite Camp, Crosby Loggins & the Lead Birds, and Brett Dennen. The annual fund-raiser is a popular local celebration of music and conservation, raising funds and awareness for the Conservancy\\\'s land preservation efforts. All proceeds support the creation of the Ventura Hillside Preserve. The City of Ventura hosts the popular children area featuring a climbing wall and other activities. Oct. 4, 8 p.m. The brilliant vocalist returns to perform an inspired mix of soulful blues and jazz numbers from her widely anticipated forthcoming album. Ojai Classic Rock Festival

Sept. 30, 11 a.m. The 10-hour live-music extravaganza features impersonations and recreations of the superstars of rock, including Pink Floyd, Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles, David Bowie and blues-rock legend Stevie Ray Vaughan. Expected highlights include Northern California\\\'s House of Floyd, a musical tribute to Pink Floyd including a special complete performance of Dark Side of the Moon, combined with a spectacular video and laser light show. ANCIENT MARKS: THE SCARED ORIGINS OF TATTOOS AND BODY MARKING Sept. 12-Oct. 10. The Ventura College Galleries present the work of Chris Rainier of National Geographic and Ventura College alumna Amanda Granfield. Rainier’s work in Gallery 2 was created during the seven years of world travel in which he photographed traditions of tattooing, scarification, piercing and other forms of body-altering art. In his time working for publications like Time, Life andthe New York Times he has traveled to Somalia, Sarajevo/Bosnia, Sudan, Ethiopia, Cambodia and Iraq documenting famine and war. Granfield’s work in the New Media Gallery explores her idea that “scar tissue interrupts these patterns and brings to mind the function of skin: a boundary to separate the self from others. Scars are a break in this boundary.
