An alternative fitness class

Local dance studio leaves women feeling sexy and empowered

By Thea Shoemaker 07/31/2008

OK, ladies, this one’s for you. Men, you probably won’t be too interested in this article unless you have a wife or a girlfriend who would like to do what I’m going to talk about.

Do I have your attention now? Good. Read on.

OK — so let’s be honest with ourselves and admit that we all want to feel sexy. We all want to be pleasing to our mates and feel sexy, right? I’m going to admit it’s almost hard for me to bring it up because I certainly don’t want to give the wrong impression, and I personally am uncomfortable with saying I’m sexy or that I feel sexy. But I certainly deep down want it!

I thought I’d share with you my latest fun thing I did for a workout that brought out the sexy in me.

Recently, one of my girlfriends told me about a fitness-style pole-dancing class. She said she had so much fun and had a great workout, too. Well, naturally, I had to try it. My friend gave me the information and Web site and before I knew it, there I was at my first class.

In order to take all other more advanced classes, you have to start with the “orientation to the pole” class. Good thing, too. Just walking around in stilettos was a challenge. The class covers all the basics, like walking, turns, etc. The things you need to know to perform “tricks” (as they call it) in the other classes.

Our instructor had us walking around the pole, doing twists and turns, deep bends and even floor work just as though we knew what we were doing. All the moves are about being sexy, but all the moves work muscles all over the body. She walked us very carefully through each and every move. Then we got to practice all the moves in a choreographed dance. This was so much fun.

I liked that the class was private; in fact, there are very strict rules to pole fitness classes. There are no guests and no observers. All classes must be prepaid and no refunds. All that being said, it was very professional not at all tacky.

I left the class feeling — I’m going to say it — a little more sexy! I felt that my muscles had a nice workout. But most of all, I felt a bit more empowered. Strangely enough, feeling sexy allows me to feel stronger as a woman, allowing me to feel more confident and comfortable in my own skin. Taking the class was a great experience and I definitely will do it again.

I took the class at Stagelight studios in Ventura. You can reach them at www.stagelightstudios.com.

In closing, I must address that doing things that are fun for fitness is much more appealing than doing something that you’re dreading — whatever it is that you choose as fun. But most importantly, remember: You’re worth it!
