Best place to look good and feel good

Retail Therapy

The owners of a new business in downtown Ventura hope to adorn people on the outside with stylish clothing and jewelry, while nourishing them from the inside through psychological care and spiritual workshops.

Retail Therapy’s space in an interesting old Victorian building at the corner of Main and Fir streets has been home to the office of holistic psychotherapist and co-owner Jenessa Nye for some time. A decision was made to remodel it to create space for a boutique, art gallery and multiuse meeting space.

Co-owner Matthew Rothman says they love collaborating with other members of the community, and look forward to helping people grow with workshops on topics such as Buddhist philosophy. “That’s part of the holistic experience. You can come here and get your head shrunk, and along with that we have an art gallery and fitness classes like yoga,” says Rothman.

Most of the clothing and jewelry they sell is made right here in Southern California. They’re aiming to provide customers with progressive looks that have a more urban edge than the surfing-inspired styles found at many other downtown clothing retailers.

The store opened June 1 at 8 N. Fir St., right upstairs from the new Ventiki Lounge and next door to the already popular accessories boutique Betty Belts.

They recycle and reuse as much as they can so that they can be recognized by the California Certified Green Business Program. Rothman says they utilized that philosophy while constructing their new space in the old structure.

Best place for a cut and a pint

The HandleBar Barbershop
2219 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd., suite 201, Thousand Oaks, 317-4283

Why get your stache in a twist when The HandleBar can handle all
your grooming needs in addition to pouring you a cold one?

Sit back, relax, have hands put upon you. In typical haircut fashion, a barber chair is the first step in a 15 to 20 minute appointment that hopefully ends with a nice do. How droll. What if I want a beer with my cut? If you ask, you shall receive at The HandleBar Barbershop in Thousand Oaks, where a pint is included in the price of a man’s cut.

Barbershops, before the advent of the liquor license, were a place for men to socialize, have a few drinks and, yes, get their hair did. They were also your old timey speakeasy, with gambling and bookies on the side. After the 1960s, this culture faded away, relegated to the likes of films idolizing a scene that just doesn’t exist anymore.

Until now, when all things retro are cool again, leaving the door open for a place like The HandleBar not only to exist but to thrive. Also, to be cool as all get out.

The atmosphere oozes cool. The barbers themselves ooze cool. You will feel cool with a drink in your hand, laid back in that comfortable recliner. After you’re finished, hang out for a bit, take a look at the classy shave wares for sale. Old fashioned creams, brushes, razors, etc. Finish that brew. Walk out like a dapper gent.

This isn’t your dad’s barbershop. Or, actually, it might be.
