Best use of vacant space for a cultural event:
Open Borders
Some people see empty space as empty space, others see possibility. Thousand Oaks film producer, photographer and entrepreneur Larry Janss saw the latter while surveying the cavernous remains of Borders Books following its closure earlier this year. He partnered with a group of eager hipsters from an arts nonprofit called Regenerate, and in two quick months, put together what was easily the most inspired and well-attended arts festival of the year.
Called the “most eclectic local festival in the Southland” by the L.A. Times, the Open Borders Summer of Music and Art ran from June 2 to Aug. 7 and featured a diverse roster of performers, including the Doors’ Ray Manzarek, Daniel Johnston, Jefferson Starship and Ramblin’ Jack Elliott. True to its name, Open Borders made room for every sector of the arts from dance to poetry, graffiti art to sculpture and more. The entire event was streamed live to the Open Borders website and volunteers made good use of social networking by updating Facebook throughout the event’s run.
It’s no simple task to fill 40,000 square feet with art and entertainment and keep people continually engaged, but Janss et al. found a way. “We all knew that it would be a lot of work,” Larry Janss told VCReporter in June, “but it really turned into a labor of love for everyone involved.”
