Sushi House, which offers both indoor and outdoor dining, is now open at 1127 S. Seaward Ave. in Ventura. …. Opening this October at 576 E. Main St. in Ventura, Spice-Topia will offer bulk spices, teas and kitchen goods. … The House of Magic at 5353 Walker St. in Ventura is now offering magic shows every Saturday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $5 and children younger than 5 are free. … Internationally award-winning photographer Kelly Segre will host a grand opening on Thursday, Oct. 4, of her new studio and gallery. Grè-Kelly Segrè Photography studio and gallery will be located at 522 E. Santa Clara St. in Ventura and the grand opening will be from 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. with refreshments, door prizes, photographs and a photo booth. … Rosa Bella Bakery will be opening at 2705 E. Thompson Blvd., suite B, in Ventura, where the Shamshi Deli was previously located. … The former location of the Cottage Cafe, 2611 E. Thompson Blvd., suite 101 in Ventura, will now be occupied by Los Deliciosos Mexican RestaurantOxnard Airport and MVP Airways have formed an agreement that will provide air service from Oxnard to Las Vegas. The celebration will be held at the Oxnard Airport Terminal on Friday, Oct. 5, at 3 p.m.


Philanthropist and hospitality veteran Ruby Oertle announced the closing of Capistrano’s Restaurant and Catering at Embassy Suites Mandalay Beach Resort in Oxnard on Tuesday. Embassy Suites Mandalay Beach Resort executives decided to not renew their lease with Oertle to pursue their own internal restaurant and event services, seeking new revenues at the beachfront property.

Don McPherson has been named the new Ventura City Fire Chief. McPherson has been a firefighter for Ventura for more than 30 years and in that time he has maintained a variety of roles, which have given him substantial experience as he proceeds from Acting Chief to Chief. … The Community Action of Ventura County (CAVC) recently appointed Timothy Hockett as the executive director. CAVC focuses on addressing the effects of poverty in Ventura County and Hockett was successful in his previous position, where he received numerous awards for his efforts to combat poverty.

Dr. Kunghae Schwartz, the director of Student Support Services for the Ventura Unified School Disctrict, was recently awarded the Adult English Learner Achievement Award by the Laubach Literacy of Ventura County  (LLVC). The LLVC is an all-volunteer nonprofit corporation that supports volunteers who tutor adult English learners. … Ferguson, Case, Orr, Paterson LLP attorney Leslie McAdam will receive the California State Bar President’s Pro Bono Service Award on Oct. 12 at the State Bar Convention. McAdam is being recognized for her work with Santa Clara Valley Legal Aid since 2009, providing legal services to individuals in need. … The Meadowlark Service League and Su Stork, a brain trauma survivor and longtime activist, will be honored by the Brain Injury Center (BIC) of Ventura County for their contributions to helping people with brain injuries. The Above and Beyond Award will be presented at BIC’s annual fundraising event on Oct. 27 at the Embassy Suites in Oxnard. … The Web Marketing Association awarded the Best Non-Profit WebAward to Casa Pacifica Centers for Children and Families (CPCCF) in its 16th annual WebAward Competition. CPCCF’s website received high points for creating an engaging site that successfully accomplishes its goal of providing hope and help for abused, neglected or at-risk children and their families.



Director of the Regional System of District and School Support (RSDSS) for the Ventura County Office of Education, Dr. Michael Babb has been selected as the new Mesa Union School District superintendent. Dr. Babb assumed his responsibilities on Sept. 24 and brings with him years of experience in education.

The Ventura County Credit Union (VCCU) will team up with the local United Blood Services on Oct. 16 to host a blood drive to support the community. The event will take place at VCCU’s Ventura office at 6026 Telephone Road, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. VCCU will also host Free Shred Day at its Ventura location and Thousand Oaks office (18 W. Thousand Oaks Blvd.) on Thursday Oct. 18, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.. … Ventura County’s local food bank, FOOD Share, will receive 10 percent of every new membership until the end of the year from Ventura Botanical Gardens. Also, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf will donate $1 until Nov. 25 from each purchase of Harvest Blend coffee bags and gift cards. … On Oct. 10, the Women’s Legacy Fund (WLF) of the Ventura County Community Foundation will grant $172,000 to 12 Ventura County nonprofits that focus on helping women. During the upcoming Women’s Legacy Fund Celebration Luncheon at the Saticoy Country Club, the WLF will also grant $10,000 to support the Women & Girls Research Project of the Ventura County Commission on Women’s Status.
