The Dr. Richard Grossman Community Foundation in Calabasas awarded its first local grant to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Conejo Valley. The $100,000 donation will be used to support a homework assistance program, Power Hour: Making Minutes Count, which is designed to raise academic proficiency. … The Gene Haas Foundation donated $851,151 to 46 nonprofits in Ventura County in 2013 and nearly $3 million nationwide. The funds assist nonprofit organizations that focus on educational scholarships, youth development and serving the needy. … The Harriet H. Samuelsson Foundation awarded a total of $483,000 to 19 nonprofit organizations throughout Ventura County that support children and adolescents younger than 18. … Porsche Car Club of AmericaSanta Barbara Region selected Gold Coast Veterans as its annual primary charity and donated more than $6,000 to its Veteran Connection program. The club has held several fundraising events and 100 percent of proceeds were donated to Gold Coast Veterans. … The Ventura Hillsides Conservancy received $2,000 from Patagonia’s Merchandise Planning Department, and Union Bank donated an additional $5,000 toward the conservancy’s watershed education and habitat restoration programs.
Garbanzo Healthy Kitchen opened at 1780 S. Victoria Ave., suite D, in Ventura. The Mediterranean restaurant offers a variety of salads (mixed greens, hummus, tabbouleh etc.), homemade pita breads and several entrees, including falafel, schnitzel, meatballs, pesto chicken and more. … Kibo Sushi, formerly Maki Yaki, is open at 2695 E. Anna Heath, an 11-year member of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme, was named the 2014 Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Coastal Area Youth of the Year and received a $2,500 scholarship from the Coastal Area Council to help her with her college expenses. Heath was among seven Club members from Kern, Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties vying for the title at the fifth-annual regional competition held March 25 at the Wedgewood Banquet Center in Ventura.  … Sharon Barringer was named March’s Teacher of the Month by the Ventura Commerce and Education Foundation. Barringer has taught for 28 years, is currently a K-5 special education teacher at Will Rogers Elementary in Ventura. She was recognized for her leadership and participation in various programs that are integral to student development. … Denise Bean-White and Chuck Huffer were nominated by Stephen Kipp, president and CEO of Kipp Financial Group (KFG), to receive the Ventura Rotary Club Paul Harris Fellow Award. Bean-White is the president and CEO of Consortium Media and Huffer is the senior vice president of KFG; they will receive the award for their continuous demonstration of high professional and personal standards within the community. …

Charles Roy has been chosen as the new president of Ojai’s Villanova Preparatory School. Roy was previously the principal of Peoria Notre Dame High School in Illinois; he has a master’s degree in educational leadership from Bradley University and a bachelor’s degree in religious studies from Wabash College. He will begin his duties on July 1. … Marvelle Berry and Rigoberto Vargas have been appointed to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme board of directors. Berry is the human resources manager of Oxnard’s Procter & Gamble and Vargas is the public health director for the Ventura County Health Care Agency. … Attorney Richard Francis joined the board of directors of Santa Barbara’s Environmental Defense Center (EDC). Francis has a private practice in Oxnard/Ventura for almost 35 years and he is a former mayor and councilmember for the city of Ventura. The EDC is the only public interest environmental law firm between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. … Edgar Terry, Mary Kaiser, Don Toussaint and Dave Staples were appointed to the board at Cal Lutheran University’s (CLU) Center for Economic Research and Forecasting. Terry, president of Terry Farms Inc. and senior lecturer in CLU’s School of Management, will serve as the board’s new advisory chair. Dr. Stuart Stoll
Stuart Stoll, M.D., an eye surgeon from Thousand Oaks, was named the new chairman of the board for the Center for the Partially Sighted, where he will oversee the organization’s work to provide rehabilitative services and training for partially sighted individuals. Stoll has a LASIK clinic in downtown Los Angeles and holds a patent on a training product that he designed to assist in training residents in eye surgery. … Jeff Becker, Angie Hecht and Jeff Smith were elected to the Downtown Ventura Partners Board after a vote by stakeholders. Hecht was voted in as a downtown business owner, and Becker and Smith as downtown property owners. … Attorney Neal Maguire joined Ferguson Case Orr Paterson LLP as a partner. On April 12, in collaboration with Ventura County Supervisor John Zaragoza, District 5, and SoCal Gas, local nonprofit Friends of Channel Coast State Parks will host a volunteer cleanup and beautification event at McGrath State Beach in honor of Earth Day. The Ventura Beach Festival will be held on May 3 at the San Buenaventura State Beach and will serve as a fundraising event that will benefit the nonprofit Friends of Channel Coast State Parks. The musical lineup will include Dirty Rice, Rey Fresco, Spencer the Gardener, the Surfaris and more. Also available: food, beverages, vendors and displays related to outdoor activities (surfing, kayaking, skating etc.).
Change in ownership
Hakane Sushi at 967 E. Ojai Ave. in Ojai is currently under new ownership. The restaurant will keep the name, and the menu will be re-created and will offer a wide selection of appetizing dishes. … The Vista Honda auto dealership at 6450 Auto Center Drive in Ventura is now Ocean Honda of Ventura. The dealership is newly owned by Jeff Cappo, founder and owner of Victory Auto Group, which operated 35 auto dealerships nationwide, including six Honda dealerships in the state.
