Opening
The Aviation Museum of Santa Paula held an official “grand opening” on Aug.3, at 800 E. Santa Maria St., suite E, in Santa Paula. The museum will be open to the public on the First Sunday of every month. . . . Caring Touch Dental opened at 6633 Telephone Road, suite 225 in Ventura.  Jay Ross, D.D.S., offers various services in preventive care (digital X-rays, fluoride. etc.), general dentistry (fillings, crowns, root canals, extractions, dentures, etc.) and cosmetic dentistry (veneers, dental implants, teeth whitening). . . . Chicago’s Finest Restaurant will open at 1780 S. Victoria Ave., suite C, in Ventura. The restaurant will serve Chicago-style dishes, including authentic Chicago deep-dish pizza and world-famous Chicago dogs; sporting events will be available on screen year-round. . . . Fit Buddha opened at 424 E. Main St. in Ventura.  The facility offers various classes and uses SPX Megaformer machines for muscular strength and endurance, cardiovascular endurance, flexibility and body composition. . . . Poseidon Brewing Company will open at 5777 Olivas Park Drive, unit Q, in Ventura. The brewery operates a seven-barrel system and includes a tasting room. . . . Authentic Thai restaurant Rice by Mama opened at 419 E. Main St., suite A, in Ventura. It serves a variety of no-MSG dishes (curry, wok, noodle, fried rice, etc.) and also caters to vegan and gluten-free diners. The menu contains a large selection of beverages, including sodas, tea, beer, sake and various wines.


Closing
Chicago Ribs and More closed its doors at 692 E. Main St. in Ventura. On the restaurant’s website, however, it indicates it will reopen at another location.


Changes
Allen Associates has been renamed Allen Construction to more accurately reflect the company’s structure and services. Allen Construction is currently undergoing rebranding but the existing website and email addresses are still functioning. . . . Cali Color Salon relocated to 144 California St. in Ventura and now also offers organic custom spray tans, eyelash extensions, hair extensions with virgin Russian hair, nail services with all-natural, handmade products and different types of massage, including cupping, aromatherapy and deep tissue. . . . Garbanzo’s Healthy Kitchen is now known as Laffa Mediterranean Grill and has introduced new items to the menu, including new wraps.


In the name of charity
The Gene Haas Foundation awarded a $210,000 grant to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Oxnard and Port Hueneme, including a $10,000 Inaugural Youth of the Year Scholarship presented to Anna Heath, a recent graduate of Pacifica High School. The Foundation is contributing $150,000 to support science, technology, engineering and math programming as well as a $50,000 challenge grant for facility upgrades to the Port Hueneme clubhouse; the Club will receive the grant if the community raises $50,000. . . . Lazy Dog Restaurant & Bar presented a $3,065 donation to the Oxnard Scholars After-School Program through a pre-opening fundraiser for its RiverPark Collection location. The funds will enable the organization to continue to sponsor the annual Scholars Spelling Bee with 2,000 local students. . . . The Oxnard Salsa Festival named the winners of the 2014 “Dancing with our Community Stars Dance Contest & Charity Fundraiser”: Rick Castaniero raised $25,825 dancing for Future Leaders of America; Lissa Coffey raised $19,470 dancing for Big Brothers, Big Sisters; and Jack Tingstrom, Tammie Helmuth, Darlene Elaine Miller and Mike Barker were successful in raising a total of $75,386 on behalf of Ventura County nonprofit organizations.

And the award goes to …
Tim Blaylock received the Lifetime Champion for Youth Award at the 60th annual Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme (BGCOP) Board of Officers and Directors installation. Nancy Mayerson was honored as Board Member of the Year, Richard Duarte received the From the Heart Award, David Wellik received the Helping Hand Award and Stephanie Corbett, Wendy Clyde, Fernando Garcia, LaCresha McManus and Mayra Rincon received Staff CECIL awards. Most Valuable Staff Member awards were given to Annie Huyhn, Eric Pastores, Roderick Rosario and Kelly Ventimiglia; and honors were given to staff members who celebrated five or more years of service to BGCOP. . . . Rick Castaniero was named People’s Choice and Men’s First Place winner (dancing with Diane Tere) at the 21st Annual Oxnard Salsa Festival; Tammie Helmuth was awarded the Women’s First Place winner, dancing with Jesse “Chuy” Rodriguez. . . . The Port of Hueneme received its fourth consecutive Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada for its Comprehensive Annual Financial Report. The recognition is the highest award possible in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting. . . . Spencer MacKenzie’s Fish Company has placed in the first round of FiveThirtyEight’s competition, placing in the Top 64 of 67,391 establishments in the country that serve burritos. Sixteen restaurants will move forward to round 2 and one will be named America’s Best Burrito in round 3. . . . The City of Ventura’s Public Works Department was awarded the American Public Works Association (APWA) Accreditation. The APWA accreditation program is a multiyear evaluation of an agency’s policies, procedures and practices compared to the best-established (nationally) management practices identified in the APWA manual.

Moving up
Samuel T. Dulin Sr. was recently named the corporate safety manager for Camarillo’s Roadrunner Shuttle. Dulin brings more than 38 years of transportation experience to the company, having previously served as the safety manager for Horizon Coach Lines. . . . Camarillo’s United Way of Ventura County named its 2014-2015 board: Thomas Cohen, Darren Kettle, Jessie Hawkins, Michael Silacci and Julia McQuillan continue to serve. New board members include Ali Nawabi, Dr. Melinda Roper, Dr. Gayle Hutchinson, Dr. Jamillah Moore, Bruce Stenslie, Nancy Williams, John Lindsey, Eduardo Flores and Dave Fowble. . . . The BGCOP named its 2014-2015 executive board; Richard Duarte, Sean Leonard, Nancy Mayerson, Mike Orman and Sean Copeland. The executive committee members include Don Facciano, Rigoberto Vargas, Robert Sills, Dean Maulhardt, Steve Kinney and Carmen Ramos-Soriano. . . . Kristin Decas, the CEO and director for the Port of Hueneme has been elected as the incoming chair for the 2014-2015 activity year of the Association of Port Authorities (AAPA). Decas will begin her one-year AAPA chairmanship in November. . . . Gregory G. Diaz was named as the new City Attorney for the city of Ventura, replacing Ariel Calonne. Diaz has served as the City Attorney for the City of Merced since 2001; he has been appointed by the Ventura City Council and is scheduled to assume his duties in late September. . . . Edward A. Morelan has joined Rincon Consultants, a Ventura-based environmental sciences and planning consulting firm as a senior engineering geologist. Morelan was previously at the Los Angeles Unified School District’s Office of Environmental Health and Safety, serving as the deputy director and site assessment program administrator. . . . Danielle L. Brinkman-Vera was appointed as the new board chairwoman for the Ventura Family YMCA. Brinkman-Vera is a certified public accountant at Brinkman & Company AAC. The 2014-2015 board also includes Coral Hansen, Mayer Hoffman, Rick Jeffery, Randy George, Paul Mistele, Jim White, Kay Woodburn, Jeff Hata, Doug Moe, Debbie Holmes and Cherie St. Jean. . . . The Economic Development Collaborative — Ventura County (EDC-VC) launched an updated website that includes a layout that is more compatible with mobile technology, with better connectivity to social media platforms and an integrated blog to share timely news and resources. The site will continue to be enhanced and there are plans to incorporate online workshops and an e-store with staff-approved business books.


Education
Full-service family restaurant chain Denny’s and the Magic Johnson Foundation awarded the 2014 Shami Sall Memorial Scholarship to five students, Malanna Wheat, Alexis Lorenz, Zoey Cigar Hodge, Micah Earley and Oxnard’s Philip Thompson. Each recipient will receive a $2,500 scholarship and will be publicly recognized by both organizations this fall. . . . SBBCollege Ventura will now offer a two-year Associate of Science in Aviation program to meet the growing industry demand for commercial pilots. The program will allow students to become qualified aviators by providing the theory and flight time required to earn a total of five aviation licenses.

Health
The Ventura County Health Care Agency (VCHCA) has begun offering walk-in immunizations in Ventura, Oxnard, Santa Paula, Fillmore, Thousand Oaks and Simi Valley in an effort to provide patients with more convenient vaccine options.  VCHCA has been working closely with Ventura County Public Health to provide a variety of services, including childhood, adult and travel immunizations; HIV, TB and pregnancy testing; and dental fluoride varnish application for children. . . . The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services awarded a $4.1 million Health Care Innovation Award to VCHCA for the implementation of a new “Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Access to Community Health” (CATCH) program. CATCH is designed to improve the stability of patients with COPD as well as identify undiagnosed patients to begin early treatment and prevent aggravation of the chronic condition.


Milestone
The Ventura County Transportation Commission (VCTC) celebrates its 25th year as the regional transportation planning agency for Ventura County and its 20th year as the operator of the county’s most extensive intercommunity bus service, VISTA.
