Healthy Habits 101
Detoxifying your body to improve your health
By Pam Vos 05/15/2008
My skin was red, itchy and I was breaking out in hives. I was embarrassed that as a fitness manager, my health seemed to be declining. It didn’t make sense. I was fit, strong, and loved health and fitness. My doctor said it was stress and prescribed four medications: prednisone, Pepcid for my stomach, an anti-itch cream and some other drug (I forget the name). After a few days on the prescriptions, I knew this was not the treatment I wanted to be on. I didn’t want to “mask” the symptoms, but to treat the problem at its root. Discussing the situation with another trainer, she gave me a card for a “master herbalist” who could help me. I went to see her right away.
That was 13 years ago, and it changed my life! As I mentioned in my last article, I am a recovering sugar-addict.
Many years of less than optimal eating habits led me to that point where I just didn’t feel well anymore. The herbalist put me on a strict diet to rid my body of Candida (sugar fuels Candida) with tons of herbs. The herbs cleansed my liver, kidneys, colon and blood supply. I was spending nearly $1,000 per month on herbs and specific foods to cleanse my body and get my health back. It was pricey … but worth it. I felt great! Since then I have experimented with other cleansing programs, some good and some not so good, but the current one I use, recommend and sell is the M’Lis Detoxification Program Kit. It’s easy to use, understand, and very reasonably priced. A chart (from Mlis) on the wall in my studio lists the following:
Symptoms Which Signal the Need to Detoxify:
• Lack of Energy
• Overweight
• Mental Confusion
• Allergies
• Eliminating less than twice daily
• Dependency on sugar, caffeine, alcohol, drugs, etc.
• Bad skin
• Body odor, excessive perspiration
• Headaches
• Digestive Irregularity
Benefits of Detoxification:
• Rejuvenates and cleanses the body
• Increases energy
• Improves mental clarity
• Helps clean out mucus, toxins and waste materials from body
• Restores body’s natural tract and colon’s peristaltic action
• Liver, kidney and blood purification
• Improves eating habits and reduces dependencies
The chart shows a diagram of a healthy colon and several (typical) unhealthy colons. Many doctors believe that 95-100 percent of all degenerative diseases begin in the colon. Dr. Linda T. Nelson, N.D., PhD., states in her book “Fibromyalgia & Candida; Living Symptom Free” that “The average person eats processed foods, overcooked foods and very little fiber. We eat way too much sugar, excessive salt, and red meat (which takes six to eight days to digest). We don’t drink enough water, and we do not exercise enough. Because of this, tract time (or elimination time) has slowed to anywhere from six to 30 days. The colon becomes clogged with waste that starts accumulating and forming layers of encrustation on its walls. The waste material begins decomposition and causes fermentation and putrefaction.”
Please consider detoxification and talk to you doctor about it. It is recommended to cleanse three to four times per year.
