Healthy Habits 101: Enjoy the sunshine
Nature’s “Feel-Good” vitamin
By Pam Vos 06/12/2008
Laying on my chaise lounge, my skin tingles as the sun melts away goosebumps from being in a cold indoor environment. It’s my mid-day sunshine break. I love it and take it nearly every day. It energizes me and calms my mind.
With our eye on the weather forecast, we all hope for sunny days. And we should … the sun makes us feel good! Yet many fear being in the sun. The worry about skin cancer looms over us, so we slather our bodies with loads of SPF products. I’m not saying that SPF products are bad, but I do know that a lot of advertising is geared toward our fears (i.e. the flu shot, which I have never had). However, the sun is not bad. In fact, it’s healthy for you. We obtain Vitamin D from the sun. It’s the best source.
What’s so great about Vitamin D? To name a few benefits …
• It aids in the absorption of calcium and phosphorus;
• Protects against breast and prostate cancer;
• It’s necessary for the development of strong bones and teeth;
• The risk for colon and colorectal cancers are low with higher levels of Vitamin D in the blood.
Too many of us are stuck indoors with our eyes fixed on the computer all day. Then we go home and flop in front of the TV, watch movies and play video games. It’s no wonder the health of the average American is declining! No one gets outdoors to enjoy fresh air and sun anymore. We are missing out on an essential element to staying healthy.
Sunshine not only delivers healthy does of vitamin D, but it will improve your serotonin levels (a “feel-good” brain chemical), improve your mood by whisking away depression, keep the immune system working, give you energy, and who can pass up that “healthy glow” from a bit of sunshine? I often find my dogs (and cats) lying in sunny spots in the house. They love it too and seem to bask in its warmth.
How much is enough? Getting anywhere from 15-20 minutes of direct sunlight (without sunscreen) a few times per week should allow you to obtain the minimal requirements of Vitamin D. Up to an hour per day is even safe. Just be moderate. You don’t want to bake, sizzle and burn! Just start off slowly.
Aside from direct sunlight to get the necessary amounts of Vitamin D, supplements can be taken to ensure you get enough. I take Vitamin D with my regular supplements every morning. Other sources are a good quality Cod Liver Oil, especially during winter months.
Now you heard it. The sun is good for you. The next thing to do is get away from the computer, get outside and enjoy the sun! Don’t forget your water.
Note: It’s always best to check with your physician before undergoing any nutritional program. Regular visits and blood tests can help to determine your nutritional needs.
