CSUCI building will bear name of Oxnard legend
A groundbreaking and dedication ceremony this week for a new building on the campus of Cal State University, Channel Islands, in Camarillo will celebrate the memory of a famed Oxnard businessman.The grand opening for the Martin V. Smith Center for Integrative Decision-Making will be Friday, April 3, at 4 p.m. According to an announcement from the school, the MVS center features a state-of-the art, 60-seat case-study classroom with tiered, semicircular seating with power outlet, data port and Internet access at each work station, as well as a large scrolling LED ticker to display streaming stock quotes and custom messages.
The building is part of the business school that also bears the name of Smith, who, known in his time as “Bud,” was a prominent figure in the Oxnard community remembered best for both his philanthropic efforts and developing the Wagon Wheel Motel off Highway 101 South. He died in 2001.

King speech remembered at vigil
A local group of healthcare professionals has organized a candlelight vigil this weekend in honor of late civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.The vigil, sponsored by Nurses for Social Responsibility, takes place Saturday, April 4, 7:30 p.m., on the steps of Ventura City Hall, 501 Poli St., Ventura. The event, which marks the 42nd anniversary of King’s speech “A Time to Break the Silence,” is intended to coincide with a national candlelight vigil with United for Peace and Justice Beyond War in New York City.
Those attending the vigil are encouraged to bring along extra candles. For further details, contact Grant Marcus at 648-2455.
Land trust announces sixth annual meeting
A presentation by a representative from Congresswoman Lois Capps’ office, in addition to snippets of an environmental documentary, will be featured as part of the yearly meeting of the Ventura Hillsides Conservancy this month.Members of the land trust, who work toward preservation of open space in Ventura, will hold the annual meeting on Friday, April 17, 6-7:30 p.m. at the Firehouse Building on the Patagonia campus, 237 W. Santa Clara St., Ventura.
A talk with Vanessa Hernandez for Capps will be followed by the showing of the trailer for “Watershed Revolution,” an upcoming film by Rich Reid.
The casual wine and cheese mixer, according to a press release, will provide an opportunity for members and friends in the Ventura region to learn of the progress the land trust has made and to preview plans for the coming year. Admission is free.

$4.6 million for housing improvements granted to county, cities
The grants, from the recently enacted American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to promote energy efficiency, were announced this week and will be forwarded on to housing authorities in the County of Ventura and three of its cities, according to the office of 23rd Congressional District representative Lois Capps.Of the recipients, Ventura County will receive $614,448; the City of Ventura, $1,625,437; Oxnard, $2,302,736; and Port Hueneme, $137,342.
The funding, Capps’ office said, will be distributed through the Public Housing Capital Fund Program of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). In addition, the County and City of Santa Barbara, as well as the City of San Luis Obispo, were also recipients in the grant cycle.
