An extensive three-year investigation by the Ventura Police Department (VPD) has culminated in an arrest for the June 3, 2009 murder of Wendy Di Rodio. Today, VPD Major Crimes Investigators arrested Gina Drake without incident at 2:30 pm in Somis. Gina Drake was the niece of victim Di Rodio.
The investigation started on June 3, 2009 after Di Rodio was found by her mother stabbed to death in her bedroom inside their residence in the 2800 Block of Sailor Ave. The investigation determined Di Rodio’s death was a homicide.
Ventura Police Chief Ken Corney stated, “The arrest comes after nearly three years and thousands of hours of investigative efforts by our Major Crimes Unit.”
Gina Drake is the former wife of VPD Officer Aaron Drake, a 12-year veteran of the department. The Drakes were married at the time of the homicide. Officer Drake filed for divorce in June 2009 and the two have since divorced.
Drake was assigned to paid administrative leave during the initial phases of the investigation of Gina Drake’s involvement, but has since returned to active duty in field operations.
“Officer Aaron Drake voluntarily and fully cooperated in the investigation,” stated Ventura Police Chief Ken Corney.
Drake was booked into the Ventura County Pre-Trial Detention Facility.
