So ya wanna lose weight?

So ya wanna lose weight?

By Thea Shoemaker 08/21/2008

Have you ever wanted something so badly that you did whatever you could to get it? Of course you have. We all have. Sometimes, when we want something, even if we don’t need it, we just get it.

So my husband and I want a Volkswagen Camper Westfalia. We want to be able to go camping again. We used to have a trailer, but I sold it in order to help grow our business. Now I have my mind set on getting this new vehicle; I’m working on every angle to find exactly the one we want for the right price. We don’t really need the van but we want it. We want to go camping and we want to have a vanagon.

After beginning my little quest, it occurred to me that if I put this same amount of attention on my business, it would grow. In fact, that’s what all successful business owners do. They’re not necessarily smarter than others; nor do they have more money. These people are driven. Driven to work for themselves and make money at it.

I thought a little more and remembered how I set my mind on a marathon … and I did it. Then the light bulb really went off: This is exactly how a person has to feel when he or she wants to lose weight.

If you really want to lose weight, you need to set your mind to it; and come hell or high water, you gotta do it. Imagine yourself the way you want to be: in the clothes you want, out on the beach in Hawaii, or in that perfect wedding dress.

Whatever it is, you must be able to see it.

You also have to want it with every ounce of you. I know firsthand that the people that I’ve worked with who lost weight were both focused and driven. They didn’t let little things like bad weather or a fight with a spouse get in their way.  In fact, I watched people go through tragic situations (i.e., losing a spouse, getting fired from their job of 15 years) who were able to still focus on that weight loss, and therefore reach their goals.

Along with the drive to reach their goals, I discovered in these individuals another key factor: They believed they could do it and didn’t let anything get in their way. When we’re excited about something, we talk about it with others but we don’t always hear what we want to hear. Others might say things like, “Why do you need that?” Or, “That sure is expensive; can you afford it?” Comments like these can sabotage your quest. I find that keeping things to myself works best when it comes to my business. This may be true for you with your fitness goals: You don’t want any negativity to stand in your way on the path to success. It’s very important to share your goals with only supportive people. They can help you get where you want to go: Remember, you’re worth it!
