The Kills What a difference Kate Moss makes. On 2005’s No Wow, transatlantic duo the Kills were content channeling PJ Harvey’s dark and dirty scuzz-blues, Florida-born singer Alison Mosshart celebrating the prurient rush of unhealthy relationships over simple drum programming and Brit Jamie Hince’s howlingly violent guitar. Mosshart continues to extol the virtues of dangerous love affairs on their new album, Midnight Boom, but the grime covering the music here is less back alley, more nightclub bathroom. Maybe it’s a stretch to blame the added gutter-glam swagger on Hince’s new supermodel girlfriend — previously the paramour of famed rock star burnout Pete Doherty — although when Mosshart sings about hospital bills, parole violations and how boring it is to date sane guys on the dance floor burner “Cheap & Cheerful,” she can probably relate. The Kills play the El Rey Theater in Los Angeles on May 21.
