Children’s mixed martial arts classes at Hostility and West Coast Jiu Jitsu
Hostility MMA: 2126 Knoll Drive, Ventura, 642-4555; West Coast Jiu-Jitsu: 2945 Los Olivos, Oxnard, 604-0944

Presidential hopeful John McCain once referred to the gladiatorial combat of mixed martial arts as “human cockfighting,” as if it were some kind of unsanctioned blood sport performed in dimly lit, piss-stained hellholes and enjoyed exclusively by drunken slimebags. His perception may have been colored by the fact that, in the mid-1990s, MMA was an unsanctioned blood sport performed in dimly lit, piss-stained hellholes and enjoyed exclusively by drunken slimebags. But that was a long time ago, and like McCain’s stances on torture and tax cuts for the rich, MMA’s reputation has changed. It has already supplanted boxing as America’s preferred way for two guys to pound the shit out of each other, and now threatens to replace pee wee football, youth wrestling and throwing rocks at the family dog as the top activity for children with pent-up energy and daddy issues.

Across the country, MMA studios are opening classes for kids as young as 5 years old, and local pain parlors Hostility and West Coast Jiu Jitsu have joined in the trend. Both facilities, located in Ventura and Oxnard, respectively, promise to teach students the fundamentals: how to properly throw punches, kicks, elbow and knee strikes, execute takedowns and apply submission holds. Off the mat, however, is where they claim their programs can be truly beneficial to impressionable tots, instilling within them confidence, respect and the ability to deal with life’s hardships — just as in The Karate Kid, but manlier.
While this may still sound barbaric for some pantywaist parents, consider this: With all the hormones in our food — not to mention the growing prevalence of steroids in popular culture — bullies are getting bigger, stronger and more manic by the school year. A simple kick to the nuts will soon no longer suffice as self-defense. If Little Billy is going to protect his milk money in the near future, he better learn how to slap on a rear naked choke, pronto.

The best place to think, meditate and pray

Stone bench at Fisherman’s Wharf in Oxnard

The studio is crowded. Upbeat music permeates the walls. The room is rocking with activity. I love it but I have a lot of work to do. It’s a full house and with my dog underfoot, my focus wanes. Pulling Tucker behind me, I slip through the room with a whispered “excuse me” as I pass everyone to step outside. The weather is great so I take an extended walk.

Opting for the scenic harbor path, it is nice to get out. At one end of the path sits a lonely stone bench. We often walk right past it in our group walks. Stopping at the bench, I notice there is nothing on either side … just water, boats, birds and sky. “This actually looks like a peaceful place to sit,” I think to myself as I curiously check out the bench. With no hurry to get back, I decide to sit down.

There is much on my mind and it wander, in a hundred different directions. Taking a deep breath, I begin to sort out my jumbled thoughts. “What do I really want to do with my life?” I ask, looking up into the heavens. “What do I really have a passion for?” The thought comes to me about the deep satisfaction I get from helping people find answers to their problems. Whether it’s how to lose weight, get stronger or the “Aha” moment when they realize something they haven’t thought of before that will improve their business or personal life. “How does my passion fit into my current business?” I wonder. The clouds shift slowly into swirls … but no answer comes. Walking back now and pondering in my heart what was most meaningful, it hits me! The wellness coaching aspect is the answer. I feel renewed and excited. I like this new spot at the Fisherman’s Wharf. I shall return again to think and pray.
