PREACHERS & PORNSTARS Despite numerous personnel changes and strange rashes, this band has soldiered on. After a six-month hiatus to find a new guitarist, it will return to Ventura County stages three times this weekend. In its latest incarnation as a five-piece, Preachers & Pornstars are packing a meaner punch than ever with grunge-laced, pedal-to-the-metal rock.  Thursday, May 28 at Nicholby’s with a stellar line-up of Ventura County’s best live music.

410 E. Main St. Ventura. 653-2320. Friday, May 29, at Red Cove, 1809 E. Main St., Ventura. 643-1101, www.redcove.net. Saturday, May 30, at Beachcomber Tavern, 206 Ocean Drive., Oxnard. 985-6030, www.myspace.com/preachersandpornstars.

NINE INCH NAILS/JANE’S ADDICTION   It’s the event of the season and déjà vu all over again when two of the ’90s biggest alternative music acts tour together for the first time since 1991’s Lollapalooza tour. Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor has served as producer and psychologist for Jane’s Addiction, which, not surprisingly, has weathered its share of personal and artistic differences throughout the reunion.  It’s the first time bassist Eric Avery has played with the rest of the band since its original split some 17 years ago. Jane’s released one record sans Avery, the highly underrated Strays, from which they will not perform any songs during this tour. Expect to hear lots of old stuff, though, from both bands and sing-alongs galore. If you can’t get into the show, parking somewhere in the vicinity to steal an earful is a definite option. Thursday, May 21, at the Santa Barbara Bowl. (800) 745-3000, www.sbbowl.com.

BEN FOLDS For such a severely-normal looking guy, Ben Folds wouldn’t know a box if he was shipped overseas in one. The piano man/vocalist who founded the now-defunct Ben Folds Five just released a greatest-hits record. Not an unusual move given the breadth of his songbook, but what is unusual is that Folds recruited other people, unknown people, to sing his songs on the record, which has been charting in iTunes’ and Amazon’s top 10. Folds’ University A Capella, the making of which has also been documented on film, is a selection of his hit songs performed a capella style by university singers around the nation. Predictably, this bold act has Folds showing up on NPR and public television talk shows like crazy. Catch him live in L.A. next week. Wednesday, May 20, at the Hollywood Palladium, 6215 W Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles. (323) 962-7600, www.benfolds.com.

VINNY GOLIA Legendary in the new music milieu, avant garde composer and multi-instrumentalist Vinny Golia is notorious for pushing the envelope where musical instruments and their players are concerned. Having established his own label, Nine Winds Records, more than 30 years ago, Golia has proved himself not only the vanguard in contemporary classical/jazz composition, but also a protector of the rare species. His much lauded group the Vinny Golia Large Ensemble was described by L.A. Weekly as “creative music on a grand scale.” They will perform at California Institute of the Arts, where Golia has been a professor for some time. Friday, May 8. CalArts Main Gallery, 24700 McBean Parkway, Valencia. (661) 255-1050, www.calarts.edu.
