A Ventura County Sheriff’s officer and Ojai resident were admitted to Ventura County Medical Center today after an altercation at the resident’s home near Lake Casitas.

The officer, whose name has not yet been released, responded to an emergency hang up call from the resident’s home. After repeated attempts to return the call, the officer was dispatched to the caller’s home at around 10 a.m. When she knocked on the door, she was confronted by John Atkinson, 32, who grabbed her Taser gun and proceeded to stun her with it. Allegedly, Atkinson was also able to grab her walkie talkie. During the struggle, the officer shot a couple of rounds, one hitting Atkinson in the lower extremities. The officer was able to escape, using her cell phone to call for back up.

"The suspect is being investigated for attempted murder on a police officer," said Eric Buschow, public information officer and senior deputy for the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department.

Buschow said that a number of people were also in the home at the time and are being investigated. Around 70 to 80 personnel arrived at the scene, including Wildlife Fish and Game, Santa Barbara law enforcement, California Highway Patrol, Ventura Police Department.
