The studio, owned by Jami Klein and Kathy Lopez, is the first in the county to offer Booty Barre classes, designed to strengthen the core and to tone the body, using moves inspired from ballet, pilates, and yoga. …The Bunker Indoor Golf Center opened in December at 1891 Goodyear Ave. in Ventura. It is an indoor driving range that specializes in golf instruction. Groups and individuals are offered ball flight simulators, video analysis and open practice using six hitting stalls and a 1,500-square-foot putting green. … The Import Emporium opened at 2400 Celsius Ave., suite G, in Oxnard. The Emporium is a cultural learning center for Asian artwork and crafts, owned by Channel Islands High School graduate and Iraq War veteran Miguel Uc Jr.

Fran Pavley, D-Agoura Hills, was named in the California Small Business Association and California Small Business Roundtable Summa Cum Laude list of California Legislators for 2012. Pavley was recognized for her continued effort to create good relationships with small business in her district. … Outreach/education specialist Barbara Wulf was honored as the Employee of the Quarter by the city of Oxnard for the fourth quarter of 2012. She received a plaque, $250 cash award, and is eligible for a $500 award if she is recognized as Employee of the Year. … Charlotte Di Paolo was named the Teacher of the Month for January by the Ventura Commerce and Education Foundation. Di Paolo is involved in organizing the school’s annual engineering competition as well as helps local families in need. She teaches seventh and eighth grade math at Balboa Middle School. … The city of Oxnard named Andrea Torres as the 2012 Employee of the Year. Torres was nominated by employees she supervises; she is the acting supervisor in the Environmental Resources Department. Volt Workforce Solutions regional manager Ellen Brown has been named the 2013 board chairperson of the Ventura County Economic Development Association. She will be replacing Bill Camarillo, assuming her role with more than 35 years’ managerial experience. … Jason Hodge, Mary Anne Rooney, Jess Herrera, Manuel Lopez and Arlene Fraser are 2013’s Port of Hueneme Board of Commissioners. At the first meeting, President Hodge reported a 15 percent growth for the first quarter in the 2013 fiscal year. … The Ventura County Air Pollution Control Board (VCAPCB) named its 2013 10-member Board of Supervisors and five elected officials representing Ventura County cities. Carmen Ramirez, Oxnard City Council member and mayor pro tem will serve as chair; and Ventura County Supervisor Linda Parks is vice chair. The VCAPCB establishes policy and approves new and amended air pollution control rules. … The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Conejo Valley recently announced Carl Goldsmith, Joe Greenberg, Mark Miller and Chuck Miwa to the clubs’ Board of Directors. … Ventura police chief Ken Corney announced a total of 12 promotions within the Ventura Police Department, ranging from the ranks of corporal, sergeant, commander to assistant chief. Susan Gerrard recently retired after seven years as the director of marketing at the Museum of Ventura County. She will be focusing on her own art and will be in Studio A-2 at the Artists in Residence campus Studio Channel Islands Art Center in Camarillo every first Saturday of the month.


The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation will award a total of $50,000 in college scholarships to high school seniors in Ventura County as part of its Reagan Presidential Foundation Scholars Program. The recipients must have demonstrated excellent leadership skills and dedication to academics and the community throughout high school. Application deadline is March 4. See … California Lutheran University (CLU) received a $500,000 challenge grant from the John Stauffer Charitable Trust to establish the John Stauffer summer research program in chemistry. The program will allow fellowships to 10 students a year to conduct original research full time for eight weeks with mentoring from faculty; CLU is seeking additional donations to reach $1 million.

The Friends of Channel Coast State Parks (FCCSP) received a total of $14,000 in grants from the California State Parks Foundation. The funds are expected to assist in the growth and development of the organization, which functions in Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties. …Patagonia recently awarded a $5,000 grant to the Ventura Hillsides Conservancy to continue work to preserve and restore the Ventura River Estuary. The grant was part of Patagonia’s Miracle Grants Program, which enabled its employees to be directly involved in grant decisions. Allen Associates of Ventura was recently recognized as the 2013 Regional Contractor of the Year by the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI). NARI’s annual  “Entire House Over $1,000,000 with Green Project Recognition” focused on a variety of fields, including innovation, aesthetics, problem solving and much more. Allen Associates’ energy-efficient project is located in Camarillo (Spanish Hills).
