James Hoover, 32, suffered a drug overdose in June 2011. Hoover had been clean for a while, but when he relapsed, his body didn’t have the tolerance for it anymore.
As a former marine, a musician, a lifeguard, an EMT and a respiratory therapist, Hoover had a lot to live for. But with great responsibility often comes great stress.
James’ sister, Gina Denger, and his father, Jim Hoover, decided to turn something tragically negative into something incredibly positive by creating a fundraising event in his name to help other addicts in Ventura County to recover.
“His main purpose in life was helping people,” said Denger. “So my purpose is to honor him by carrying that on through the Genesis Program.”
The benefit, known as SRO, raised more than $12,000; and since the cost for one individual is $6,000 for rehab recovery, SRO was able to successfully send two people through. The idea for the acronym SRO came from the words that musicians look for on a concert billboard: Standing Room Only.
“Our way is through music, our motivation is through love, and our goal is recovery,” Denger said.
Drug and alcohol addiction are major problems in today’s society. Only one out of every 30 addicts achieves recovery.
Jim Hoover, a retired drug and alcohol therapist at the Genesis Treatment Center, as well as James Hoover’s father, said that his biggest heartache was knowing addicts who wanted to recover but didn’t have the resources.
“I knew they desperately wanted to get better. They just couldn’t,” Hoover said.
The Genesis Treatment Center is a chemical dependency treatment program that provides outpatient therapy to recovering addicts.
“It helps build a foundation of sobriety while allowing the addicts to continue working and functioning in their daily lives,” Hoover said.
The second annual SRO benefit event will be held 4 p.m. to midnight this Saturday, June 22, at Bombay’s in Ventura. There will be a great lineup of local bands, artists, an auction, a VIP raffle and more. This special outdoor music event will sponsor drug and alcohol recovery through the Genesis Program.
The cost is $20 pre-sale, $25 at the door, and $75 limited pre-sale. All proceeds will go toward helping individuals seek treatment through the Genesis Treatment Center. For more information, visit www.genesisprograms.com.
