The VCReporter ran a cover story last February, on heavyweight boxer Magomed Abdusalamov. The Russian fighter, who was a practicing Muslim, had recently moved to Ventura County with his wife and three young daughters. The article was notable as it was Abdusalamov’s first cover story in any American publication and had the only published photos of Abdusalamov and his family. In a horrific tragedy, this past November, after making his HBO debut in a brutal 10-round loss, a blood clot was discovered on his brain due to injuries sustained in the fight. After suffering several strokes during the surgery, he remained in a coma for more than a month.
He is now recovering in a rehab center in New York but he has yet to, and may never, regain the ability to talk or walk again. ESPN’s award-winning series Outside The Lines will be airing a feature on Abdusalamov and the controversy surrounding the fight, in particular the fact that the New York State Athletic Commission did not detect any issues or send Abdusalamov to a hospital as is required based on his injuries. Outside The Lines is scheduled to air this Sunday on ESPN (6 a.m. Pacific time) and on ESPN NEWS (at 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. Pacific time). We will continue to keep readers updated on Abdusalamov’s condition. To make a donation that goes directly to the Abdusalamov family, visit www.ring10ny.com.
