Believe it or not, there was a time when expectant parents and everyone shopping for them had maybe a handful of choices in diaper bags, and just about all of them involved the colors pink, blue and that reigning king of gender-neutral hues: yellow. Things have changed a lot since then, with much of the credit going to Ventura designer DeNai Jones, founder of Petunia Picklebottom. Jones’ reimagining of the previously dreaded but necessary evil has grown into an international, multimillion-dollar operation that includes a full line of women’s handbags and accessories and a separate men’s line: Sons of Trade. When Petunia Picklebottom’s luxe fabrics, fun prints and unexpected colorways catapulted her diaper bags into the mainstream (unofficial celebrity endorsements such as Reese Witherspoon’s didn’t hurt, either) a curious thing happened: Women continued to use the bags post-potty training. It became apparent that such fresh forms of function needn’t be reserved only for mommies and daddies to enjoy; today the high-end bags — diaper and otherwise — are highly coveted. Launched a little more than a year ago, Sons of Trade, the yang to Petunia Picklebottom’s yin, is giving men permission to explore new territories with its rugged, streamlined bags and backpacks that make it totally OK to take a few things along for the ride.

While calling Moxie Hair and Design Studio in Camarillo a salon would technically be correct, it’s really cutting the location short. From the moment you slip into the decadently colored interior and are enveloped in an intoxicating aroma that is equal parts coffee, candy and conditioner, you know you’ve found someplace so much more than that.
In addition to the traditional fare of hair styling, coloring, extensions, condition treatments, as well as spa manicures and pedicures, Moxie also provides a thoughtfully stocked gift boutique, free drinks (would you care for a beer with your blow dry?) and a snack bar, complete with a functional cotton candy machine.
“We don’t want anyone leaving here without a good taste in their mouth,” said owner Kari Lisak.
Lisak is originally from Camarillo and comes from a long line of successful, “self-employed entrepreneurs.” Her lineage boasts a former Oxnard mayor and her parents ran a local tractor business. Originally, Lisak wanted to delve into decorating and interior design and even attended an art school in Pasadena before obtaining her cosmetology license.
Moxie Hair and Design Studio is an amalgam of Lisak’s diverse interests made physical. The name, too, is reflective of Lisak’s personality. As the first woman in her entrepreneurial family to strike out on her own, she admits it has been an undertaking that has required “talent, desire, style and spunk” to be successful.
