EDITOR’S PICKS

Best place to get a shnazzy purse, briefcase or anything carry on

Studio Sauvageau
334-B E. Ojai Ave., suite B, Ojai,
646-0677,
www.studiosauvageau.com

This is one of those places where you can purchase your item where it was made and probably meet the person who made it. In this case, it is largely one-of-a-kind, beautifully handcrafted purses, briefcases, travel bags, backpacks and more.

There is no lack of options for individuals with every taste in the studio showroom; the bags are exquisitely designed and come in a variety of sizes and colors as well as textures. Any buttons are vintage or antique and coordinate with the fabric, and all seams are invisible or bound. The bags are made on the premises and the materials used are top of the line; and the fabrics are not only eye-catching, they are waterproof and machine washable.

And regardless of what type of bag you prefer, Studio Sauvageau maintains practicality while handcrafting its distinctive designs.

For example, there’s the Holly Bag, a multi-functional bag with 13 pockets of varying sizes (eight outside and five inside) that can be used as a large purse, tote, gym bag or diaper bag, among other things, and it can be carried comfortably over the shoulder. There is the briefcase, which is made for daily use if you’d like. It has a zipper opening at the top and a multitude of practical pockets; on the outside, there are two sized for a cell phone, glasses or a small water bottle and two large pockets with Velcro tab closures sized for bundles of paper. Inside, there are three pen pockets and four rectangular pockets, and the bottom of the bag is removable.

Like many of the bags and totes offered at Studio Sauvageau, you have the option of carrying the bag over your shoulder. The briefcase features a padded, removable, adjustable shoulder strap.

The owner and designer behind the handcrafted handbags is River Sauvageau; she was introduced to sewing at age 7 and subsequently taught the art of needlework. She was selling her creations by age 16. Her creativity flourished into an extensive career and ultimately led to delicately and passionately designing and crafting bags in Ojai.

Best place to support the local economy

Oxnard Farmer’s Market
Thursdays  9 a.m.-2 p.m.
Plaza Park, Oxnard
247-0197

Photo by: Downtown Oxnard Merchant’s Association

Every city in the county has a farmer’s market, but none are quite like the one in downtown Oxnard. It may not be the largest — just 35 vendors — but what this market lacks in size it makes up for in location and spirit. Set up in lovely Plaza Park (at the corner of C and Fifth streets) every Thursday morning, you can shop the bounty of the county under shady trees to the sound of music.

“We like to have live music,” says Gary Blum, who serves on the executive board of the Downtown Oxnard Merchant’s Association, which operates the market. “We’ve been trying to build on the market’s strengths.” And creating a festive atmosphere for downtown employees, neighborhood families, and anyone else who cares to join in is definitely one of the Oxnard market’s strong suits.

Naturally, you’ll find the best of local agriculture there, everything from avocados to zucchini. But you can also shop goodies like olive oil, hummus and cheese, and non-consumables like homemade soap, essential oils, incense and crafts. And while you’re picking up your fresh produce for the week, you might want to grab some lunch. “We have several food options at the market,” Blum adds. “Hot dogs, roasted corn, tamales, fruit cocktail and almonds …. If you want a large lunch or just a small snack, you have a lot of choices.” If you don’t want to have a picnic on the grass, the market always provides lots of tables and chairs — one of the few markets to do so.

The merchant’s association took over management of the 25-year-old market a year ago, and having downtown business owners bolstering local farmers has been a win-win situation. “We ramped up our social media,” says Blum. “Being a mid-week, mid-day market, you have to work a little harder to reach your customers.”

Partnering with nearby Carnegie Art Museum, the market started hosting free arts and crafts projects for kids. In October, noted pumpkin carver Jon Neill will headline a pumpkin carving exhibition. A “happening” market means more business for vendors and downtown enterprises alike.

“We just run our own little downtown market,” Blum says, “so we try to do the best we can. All the money we make goes right back into the market. And we try to make the market a major part of the community.” And what gets spent in this local community, stays in the local economy. You can’t get that at the mall.
