Reopening

Johnson Gardens celebrated a grand reopening at 1055 Johnson Drive in Ventura. The celebration marked the completion of a $28.8 million acquisition and rehabilitation project by the Housing Authority of the City of San Buenaventura (HACSB) that fully renovated the 101 apartment units for extremely low-income seniors and disabled persons in Ventura. HACSB’s and its nonprofit, Homecomings Inc.’s work involved extensive infrastructure, energy and water efficiency improvements and upgrades and interior restoration work.

The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme (BGCOP) received more than $21,000 from the Third Annual Women and What We Love fundraising event organized by Mayerson Marketing & Public Relations. All proceeds will support BGCOP’s programs and its 9,200 youth. … With the help of 2,223 volunteers, School on Wheels helped 3,491 homeless students in 2015. The nonprofit organization awarded scholarships to 19 students, distributed 4,162 brand-new backpacks filled with school supplies, provided 3,000 bus tokens for parents to get students to and from schools, and launched three Digital Learning Centers, with 794 students. … Ventura Homeless Prevention (VHP) was awarded a $3,000 grant from the Julius Gius Memorial Foundation of the Rotary Foundation of Ventura. The funds will help VHP prevent several people from becoming homeless. The organization can keep a household from eviction for an average of about $700 (as a onetime rent payment) and, so far, has spared over 1,040 housed, nearly 40 percent of them children. … For the 10th consecutive year, Wheel Fun Rentals has renewed its partnership for the Biking Buddies program with Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS). The nationwide program will provide free recreational rentals to underprivileged children and their mentors. The program is valid at more than 50 locations and supports over 20 BBBS chapters; to date, $1.25 million worth of free rentals has been donated.
