Best trail of video gamesbestof-entertainment

Hypno Comics & Games, 1803 E Main St., Ventura, www.hypnocomics.com; Pastime Legends, 2040 E Main St., Ventura, www.pastimelegends.com; The Arc Foundation Thrift Store, 265 E Main St., Ventura, www.arcvc.org; Salzer’s Records, 5777 Valentine Road, Ventura, www.salzers.com

Ventura has a beer trail, it has a wine trail and, dare I say, it also has a video game trail. The city has leveled up into a gaming enthusiast’s candy land in recent years. Start off at the progenitor of classic gaming in Ventura, Hypno Comics & Games, where the hobby has taken a leap into modernity.
Not only does the shop feature selections for a variety of retro systems (think the original Nintendo and Sega Genesis), but also in stock are hard-to-fi nd titles and games originally only released in Japan. Don’t have your old system? No sweat. Hypno carries a wide line of emulators to play your new cartridges, and they won’t break the bank.
Next, hop over to Pastime Legends where trips to your local video rental section in the early 1990s come to mind. The shop, with a sister store in New York, offers wall-to-wall
selections of cartridges and discs for every system imaginable, from Atari to the PlayStation 4. A copy of Ecco the Dolphin for the Sega Genesis hopped off the shelf at me on my last visit, whispering, “Take me home, old friend.”
On Main Street, you’ll fi nd among grandma’s ceramic pugs and VHS copies of Jerry Maguire at the various thrift stores, perhaps, a few treasures. On a recent foray into the dungeons of the Coalition Thrift Store, I came away with a copy of Final Fantasy VII for the original PlayStation. Oftentimes, you’ll find dozens of outdated sports titles but, like digging through the Alabama dirt, you’ll sometimes score a diamond.
Finally, hop on the 101 and head to Salzer’s Records where used games are the name of the, uh, game. Salzer’s has a nice, large selection of previously owned titles at markdown prices.
Take a weekend to browse your local purveyors for the gems you never knew you wanted. — Chris O’Neal

Best place for eclectic entertainment

Santa Paula Concert Series, Santa Paula Theater Center, 125 S. Seventh St., 525-4645, www.santapaulatheatercenter.org; Universalist Unitarian Church, 740 E. Main St., 525-4647, www.uucsp.org

Santa Paula isn’t known for its nightclub scene, but it is home to some of the most unique musical entertainment in the county. The Santa Paula Concert Series has brought in everything from sitar players and bluegrass bands to Celtic instrumentalists and classical music ensembles — a truly diverse lineup that puts the “world” in world music. No genre or time period is off limits, either: medieval, Renaissance and Romantic productions have alternated with R&B, rock ’n’ roll and jazz concerts.
Some of the acts that the concert series brought in just this past year include classical pianist Geno Palilla, the multi-artist production Call 2 Peace, son jarocho group Chucumite, the country-rock duo Rowan Brothers, and the funky, folksy Dirty Cello. A string quartet and a renowned harpist will perform later in the year. The overall lineup might intentionally defy categorization, but it’s all top quality — and unlike anything else currently being offered in the 805.
The Santa Paula Theater Center and the Universalist Unitarian Church share hosting duties, and each venue is historically interesting in its own right. SPTC, built in 1911, was once a film
studio, and its architecture (shingle craftsmen), landscaping and social history make it one of the most storied structures in Santa Paula. The church’s building dates from 1892 and was designed in the Richardson Romanesque style, now a rarity in Southern California. It also boasts numerous art nouveau stained glass windows. Both venues are more intimate than your typical concert hall, but still offer ample seating and wonderful acoustics in an attractive setting.
They are also both located right in the heart of Santa Paula’s picturesque downtown district (and practically across the street from each other), so there’s easy access to some fabulous restaurants and trendy bars for a full night on the town. If music and culture away from the madding crowd is your cup of tea, the Santa Paula Concert Series makes a short drive up the 126 well worth your time. — Nancy D. Lackey Shaffer
