Best way to help the aquatic environment

Surfrider Foundation, Ventura County Chapter, https://ventura.surfrider.org

When the Surfrider Foundation was founded in 1984, it started as a loose group of surfers trying
to protect their surf break in Malibu. Since then, it has grown to more than 50,000 members with 85 chapters across the nation. One of the first chapters to launch was right here in Ventura County. “Surfers Point is the chapter’s oldest project,” says Sadie Iverson, chair of Surfrider Ventura, who joined the organization in 2009. “Saving the beaches and surf break from sea walls and coastal armoring is what prompted the founding of our local chapter in the early 1990s.”
Surfrider Ventura successfully launched a managed shoreline retreat program to move a bike path and parking lot farther away from the ocean at Surfers Point, and established a natural “erosion buffer zone” by restoring the beach and dune environment. “What we’re working toward now is Phase II of that project, which would move that managed retreat downcoast toward the Promenade,” Iverson says. “It
would allow for the preservation of the beach for recreation, and will help prevent further erosion.”
Surfers Point might be its most successful project, but it’s far from the only one. Surfrider Ventura has been heavily involved in the “Yes on Proposition 67” campaign, which aims to make disposable
plastic shopping bags banned in California. A bill banning plastic bags statewide was signed by Gov.
Jerry Brown in 2014, but was stalled and will now be put on the November ballot as a referendum. “We think it’s important to keep the bag ordinance that was passed. We are very dedicated to getting non-biodegradable litter out of our waterways,” Iverson explains.
The most recent initiative is also aimed at preventing beach litter. The Hold Onto Your Butt campaign kicked off this summer. “We want people to understand that cigarette butts are non-biodegradable, so don’t throw them on the beaches,” Iverson says.
Despite the name, Surfrider isn’t just about the ocean: The organization advocates for river and estuary health, too. The overall goal locally is to protect the county’s aquatic natural resources for generations to come. There are lots of ways to get involved: You can join one of the monthly beach cleanup campaigns or attend a chapter meeting the first Tuesday of every month at Patagonia (235 W. Santa Clara St., Ventura).
If you’re as passionate about environmental health as Surfrider Ventura, the organization will certainly want you on board. — Nancy D. Lackey Shaffer

Best way to support local farmers without leaving home

Ojai Valley Online Farmstand, www.ojaifarmstand.com

In the mood for some fresh homegrown tomatoes but your nearest farmers market is a bit of a drive away?
Both online shopping and organic foods are always popular with customers, so one Ventura County entrepreneur decided to combine them. The Ojai Valley Online Farmstand offers the comfort and fl exibility of ordering from your couch with the ability to support local farmers and eat fresh and healthy produce.
Owner Max Becher started his unique business as a way to connect small farms with consumers in the Ojai Valley/Ventura County area. Customers can log on each week to view the in-season produce and select which items they want. They can also choose to receive a box each week or every other week with items selected by Becher and the farmers themselves. Orders are delivered on Wednesdays for a flat $5 delivery fee to homes in Ojai, Ventura and Santa Paula.
The online stand offers the usual items that would be found at a farmers market, such as tomatoes, squash, apples and berries. The range of different and unique
items, however, always keeps the mix interesting. A quick peek at a recent week’s selection shows squash blossoms, figs and sweet corno di toro Italian peppers. Customers receive a weekly email letting them know when the new selection for the week has been uploaded onto the website. Becher often includes links to recipes and ideas for the more unusual items — his tasty tip for the squash blossoms is to stuff them with cheese and fry them.
Becher also offers non-perishables and baked goods, ranging from organic ground coffee and granola to homemade oatmeal chocolate-chip cookies and pumpkin muffins baked by his mother-in-law.
The Ojai Valley Farmstand may not be a place where you can wander around outside and drive home with a car full of fresh produce. But it is a place where you can take five minutes out of your day, whether you’re at the office, at home or at the gym, and let Becher and his crew know what you’d like them to bring directly to you. — Stephanie Lamore

Best place to get your walker (and more) tuned up

Owner David Knudson works on a bike.

Owner David Knudson works on a bike.

All Pro Bicycles, 2385 Tapo St., Simi Valley, 583-4296

David Knudson got into road cycling as a teenager and started working as a mechanic
right away.
“I just enjoy taking things apart and putting them back together,” Knudson said. “I started working on them when I got my fi rst bike, when I was 15 years old. It was an old English three speed, and I transformed it into a 10-speed. I just kinda taught myself how to do it.”
Knudson is the chief mechanic and co-owner, along with his wife, Gina, of All Pro Bicycle Shop. The shop offers a variety of bikes for sale, from entry level to high-end, from mountain to road to cruiser. They also have a nice collection of equipment, apparel and tools.
The shop offers free lifetime tuneups on any bikes purchased there. But even if you need more than just a tuneup, or if you got your bike somewhere else, Knudson can still take care of it. He can fix anything with wheels. He said that he even fixed an elderly person’s walker once.
“We can do anything from change a fl at tire, simple tune ups, to custom wheel and bike building,” reads the store’s website. “With over 35 years of bicycle mechanic experience [Knudson] is able to work on all types of bicycles; road, mountain, old and current.”
David and Gina bought the shop 18 years ago and have been building a reputation as the best bike shop in Simi Valley ever since. Due to a combination of excellent customer service and mechanic skills, you’d have a hard time finding any customer complaining about an experience at All Pro. What you’ll mostly find is the opposite, people raving about it.— Elliot Keegan
