The dream of the ’90s was alive in Ventura last week, when alt-rock icon Garbage came to the Majestic Ventura Theater. The crew — Duke Erikson on guitar and bass, Steve Marker on guitar and keyboards, Butch Vig on drums and the inimitable Shirley Manson bringing her raw energy and distinctive voice to vocals — rocked the house with songs from their latest album (and critical hit) Strange Little Birds.

But it was the grungy spirit of the band’s old material that really brought the crowd to its knees. Pounding out “Stupid Girl” and “I’m Only Happy When It Rains” with anger and intensity, Manson and Co. proved that two decades and a series of breakups haven’t dulled their jagged edge.
