The Oxnard Fire Department and Oxnard Firefighters Foundation have premiered a short safety video featuring the tragic story of a local 12-year-old boy who lost his life on Father’s Day, 2013. At the premiere of the video, which was shown to students at a local elementary school, Firefighters handed out bicycle safety helmets in memory of Joey.
The video which coincides with the helmet giveaway creates a powerful message about bicycle and traffic safety, says the Department.
Joey Johnson was riding his bike north on Carmen Road in Camarillo on June 16, 2013, when he was hit by a vehicle. Johnson was not wearing a helmet at the time. The video includes a reenactment of the event, as well as interviews with his mother, father and friends who were riding with him that day.
Around 120 students received helmets from the firefighters. For more information on the Department, visit www.oxnard.org/fire-department.
