The pop-up exhibition Social Fiction took place at Studio Channel Islands’ Blackboard Gallery last week, and featured “pieces of thought, verve and community” made by artists facing “adversity in a broken system,” whose multimedia works gave voice to the marginalized and challenged the oppressive status quo. The mesmerizing highlight was the installation “Nonbinary” by Los Angeles artist Kevin Hallagan, whose cloud of broken mirrors reflected images of masculinity and femininity throughout the gallery — a beautiful and provocative invitation to shatter societal expectations.
