Construction

Cabrillo Economic Development Corporation and the Housing Authority of the City of San Buenaventura (HACSB) held a groundbreaking ceremony on Phase II on April 5 at 11094 Snapdragon St. in Ventura. The 22-unit project will include 11 special needs units; four will be designated for homeless veterans and seven as non-VASH units. … HACSB held a groundbreaking of the Rancho Verde Apartments at South Saticoy Avenue. and Blackburn Road in Ventura. The property will contain 24 USDA rural housing units constructed as a multifamily site for farmworker households. It will be the first net zero multifamily residential property in the city of Ventura, and landscaping will be irrigated by an onsite graywater facility.

The Las Patronas 61st Annual Debutante Ball was held recently, and proceeds from its program will be used to fund charitable programs such as Assistance League Ventura County. Las Patronas, in conjunction with its Patrons Program, has raised $40,000 so far this year. … The New West Symphony received a gift of $200,000 from Jordan Laby to sustain and support its Harmony Project music education program for underserved students in Ventura County. Also announced, the renaming of the program to the Laby Harmony Project of the New West Symphony as a tribute to the continued generous support by Jordan Laby and his late wife, Sandra, who founded the Ventura County program in partnership with New West Symphony in 2011.

Thomas Fire

Thomas Aquinas College received two grants to help with its recovery efforts in the aftermath of the Thomas fire. The campus was awarded $511,000 from the Dan Murphy Foundation, which will fund the replacement of trees, fencing and irrigation surrounding the campus as well as trees and landscaping on its lower portion. The $370,000 from the Edwin L. Wiegand Trust will be used to purchase a backup power system for St. Joseph Commons, which houses the kitchen and dining room.
