For the first time in its history, the Amgen Tour of California on Monday, May 14, will launch a stage from the city of Ventura.
Stage 2 will begin at 11:15 a.m. from the Ventura Pier and travel south through Camarillo before wrapping around toward the north, ending at Gibraltar Road in Santa Barbara County. The tour will pass along Lewis Road, adjacent to California State University, Channel Islands, where riders are expected to arrive by 12:15 p.m.
Organizers say that gathering students and others will cheer on the riders and give them a big “Camarillo welcome.”
“We are thrilled to have the riders pass by the school, and even more excited that it allows the children to be a part of such an inspiring event,” said Camarillo Hotel and Tourism Association Executive Director CHTA Executive Director Adriana Huizar.
In 2016, the premier 650-mile cycling race passed through the city of Ventura, where Cabrillo Middle School students welcomed the riders by spelling “Ventura” using their bodies. The city’s enthusiasm about having the race pass through was noted as being one of the deciding factors in selecting Ventura as a launching site.
