If the price is what has kept you from making a purchase from a local artist, then mark your calendar for “The Great Art Theft” exhibit running April 6- May 5 . “The Great Art Theft,” the Ojai Art Center’s annual fundraiser, has a grand finale held May 5th from 1-4 p.m. where you can walk away with a great piece of art for $80.
“This event is where local art is a steal,” said Bonnie Reige, OAC gallery chair. “Fine art offered at ridiculously affordable prices. A seventy-five dollar ticket gets you a piece of original art.”
Reige’s Art Center Gallery Commitee has again lassoed many of the best artists in town to donate a piece of their work for purchase and all of it will be on display in the Gallery beginning April 6. The public can preview the work and patrons will purchase tickets for $80 each. At the event, all the tickets purchased will be put into a big spinning cage (like the ones you’ve seen on TV) and one lucky ticket at a time will be drawn. The person that holds that ticket gets to chose any piece of art off the gallery walls or from the showcase. Luck will determine who chooses when, but that ticket holder will walk away with a work of art.
“Due to the generosity of local artists during last year’s Great Art Theft, we were able to accomplish needed renovations and improvements,” said Teri Mettala, OAC director. “The original maple floor in the Main Gallery is now beautifully refinished, and a major renovation of the Raymund Room is well underway. Now in our 80th year we count on fundraisers, like the Great Art Theft, to ensure we can continue to be a thriving space in our community for all the arts.”
“Besides, everyone has so much fun at these events,” said Leonard Klaif, Ojai Art Center President. “So get ready to decide just how many tickets it would be worth to make that dash to your favorite artist and help the Art Center in the process. It truly is a lot of fun.”
The tickets will be on sale at the Art Center office during regular business hours, Tuesday through Sunday noon to four. All proceeds go to the Center. The Ojai Art Center is located at 113 S. Montgomery St. For more information call the Art Center at 1 805-646-0117 or go online at www.ojaiartcenter.org.
