Los Angeles Ave., Simi Valley 805-579-7353, www.burgerexpressfreshmex.com The name is deceiving at Burger Express, a Simi Valley restaurant that’s popular for its Mexican food. “We prepare everything from scratch, nothing out of a can — people like that it’s so authentic,” said Armando Ferretiz, who opened the eatery with his brother, Dio, 14 years ago. The duo built the menu around their mother’s and grandmother’s recipes from Central Mexico. “You also get a lot of stuff for your money. You can get a meal for under 10 bucks.” The top-selling Mexican dishes include the Compadres Chicken Enchiladas. “It’s very, very popular with a white creamy sauce, and I call it Compadres because it has two sauces that get along very well — they’re good friends,” Ferretiz said. Customers also love the gourmet taco plate with two chicken, two pork and two steak tacos on freshly made corn tortillas, accented with fresh diced onions and cilantro, and sliced limes on the side. Every dish comes with chips made fresh from corn tortillas, and the choice of one or all of several salsas, including a version made with roasted chilis, pepper and tomatillos and another made with fresh tomatillos, spices and cilantro. Although the restaurant is located off the beaten path at 3200 E. Los Angeles Ave., the business has thrived over the years through word of mouth. “We’ve never advertised,” said Ferretiz. Customers resonate to the eatery because of the personalized customer service, which involves making dishes tailored to vegans and vegetarians. The Vegetarian Enchiladas, another popular dish, are filled with zucchini, squash, spinach and corn covered in a special white sauce, with rice and beans on the side. Salads on the menu — big enough for two people — include the California Chicken Salad and the Cobb Salad, with homemade dressings made from scratch including ranch and a house version of Thousand Island. The vinaigrette and Sante Fe dressing both contain secret ingredients. Of course, there are burgers on the menu, made from top-quality beef. Ferretiz is especially proud of the Mexican Heart Attack, a half-pound hamburger patty with a quarter pound of pastrami, grilled onions, Serrano cheese, a special mayonnaise, bacon, a fried egg “and more cheese on the top that drips down . . . it’s addictive.” The owners recently added a full bar for those who want a cocktail to complement their meal. For customers who crave a special nonalcoholic drink, Ferretiz spent two weeks inventing his Horchata recipe, and brews Jamaica from dried hibiscus flowers he seeps for hours. Recently, the Ferretiz brothers opened another restaurant three doors down, the Ferretiz Grill and Café, which has earned a reputation on social media for having the best breakfast in town. At both restaurants, “there’s a story behind each dish,” Ferretiz said. “The day I lose my passion for all this, I will close the doors.” —Story and photos by Alicia Doyle
